Because a lot of this has come up before, and a lot of you don't know me as anything more than "Adam's mun" I thought I should address some general things about how I RP. Normally I'd post this on my LJ, but I think that it's best if people who may not have that journal friended see it as well.
Me and RP
1. I am a lawyer. I work full time. I work for the state, which means sometimes I have nothing to do for a week, and sometimes I'm here working until 3 AM. It really varies from day to day sometimes.
2. I do have internet access at work and an office of my own, so yes, I can RP and write prompts at work.
3. However, my order of priority for my day generally goes: Work, Write original stuff, write prompts, tag.
4. I am a writer. I have one novel finished that I'm trying to get submitted, but I'm working on outlining the next, and getting it written, and there are always short stories I'm working on for submission as well. So there are times that I'm online or when I may tag chatty/meme/sws things for a brain break, but I may not be tagging threads.
5. I joined all these prompt comms and such 5 years ago to write. I didn't know what RP was. I'd never RPed in my life. When Lilah responded to my Wesley's first post--I was shocked and all, "Oh! This is fun!" But it's really been about the writing for me. I put a lot of time and thought into voice of my characters and into my writing, and some days all I want to do is write prompts for a while and let those voices flow.
6. I do, however, love to RP. I have made lots of very dear friends through it, find it a challenging break from fic writing, and am always happy to play with anyone who's interested. This, however, means I play with a lot of people. Of my truly active muses, Adam has God knows how many separate timelines in which he plays. Melissa has three. Sark has four. Lydia has...six? Seven? Something. This is because I will pretty much play with anyone who approaches me to play, and I don't want to just play favorites and say, "Oh, well, Adam's already playing with a Peter, a Hiro, a Nathan, an Elle, so sorry." Spread the love, etc, etc. You come to me and say, "Bria, I'd love a chance to play Peter, and I like his and Adam's interaction in the show, will you play with me?" And unless you've been utterly wanky to me in the past and made me swear to never play with you again, then I'm going to say, "Sure!" and work hard to make it work.
This does, however, mean that I am spread thin sometimes. I can have upwards of 40 active threads going on at a time. Add that in to the business of being a lawyer, working my original stuff and trying to make sure I don't get kicked out of the prompt communities that are the very reason I am here in the first place--and sometimes I might not tag back right away.
Sometimes, I might. There are days when I manage all the tags in my inbox smoothly and keep up with everyone and you might get 10 tags to one thread. Then there might not be another for 3-4 days (or when we're in Session and I'm working crazy overtime, I'm sad to say--1-2 weeks). I have a goal of at least tagging everything in my inbox once every other day. With work, with RL stuff--I don't always achieve that.
Sometimes, I'm tired. I get home from a long day, and I cannot think to tag anything plotty or deep conversations--I'm not capable of having deep conversations as myself to a friend, let alone managing to have a deep conversation or move a plot forward as a writer for a fictional character. I might not tag at all, or I might tag crack and absolutely nothing else. Or maybe I can only handle one voice of one muse, and so I tag only that muse that night because I'm too tired to juggle multiple voices.
7. If I haven't tagged a plot-driven thread in a few days? I do not mind being poked and asked about it. Please-NEVER feel bad about asking me about tagging. I may have not gotten the notif (we know how LJ is). I may have thought I tagged, but didn't--sometimes I write a whole tag out in my head, think I've posted and haven't. I may be struggling with the muse. I may have had a few bad days at work. It may be any number of things. I really do try to get to things in a timely manner. I NEVER don't tag because I don't like you or your muse unless you're like...one of a grand total of 3 people who wouldn't tag me anyway, so not an issue. If you really need me to tag something because I'm holding you up--let me know, and I'll either say, "Ok, if it's really that necessary and I'm holding you back, maybe I should bow out because xyz are going on in my life" or I'll say, "Oops! Sorry! Let me get right on that."
8. If I haven't tagged a chatty/meme/sws thread that isn't plotty? I may have just dropped it because I had too much else going on. If it was one you really wanted to continue, let me know, and I'll be happy to go back to it, but a lot of those end up just being muse's shooting the shit which is fun for a while, but hundreds of comments in can get really hard for me to manage with everything going on.
9. Smut -- sometimes I tag it at work. Sometimes I don't. It depends on how the day is going, how focused I am, etc. I hate when smut threads just become repetitive, and so I try to think of different ways to say things/tag things/etc when tagging them, and sometimes I'm just not feeling sexy sitting in a government office, y'know? *g* Doesn't mean I'm not into the thread or my muse doesn't seriously want to be sexing your muse up. Just means I, Bria, may be waiting for a more opportune moment to really concentrate on it and give you a good tag back.
10. Mistakes -- We all make them. We misread a tag, we get too multi-tasking and miss something. We plain fuck it up. I am of the mind that we, the writers, are writers. People. We make mistakes writing and I, at least, am always 100% willing to go back and fix them. Ret-con, delete tags and rewrite, talk it out as writers and say, "ok, that went badly and not how we envisioned it, let's do this..." Whatever. It's a game. We are the real people. The muses are fictional characters filtered through our perceptions of who they are and what they would do in a given situation. We have creative control. We should be true to our characters, but always remember we're being true to our interpretation of the character and working in a cooperative environment with other writers working to be true to their interpretation of a character--who is 7 times out of 10 someone else's creation. Anyway--all of that is to say, if I fuck up and have Byron do something that totally he wouldn't have done, or I miss something you toss at me because of whatever--I'm distracted or I'm an idiot? Dude, call a redo. Whatever, I'll redo. I revise my stories all the freakin' time before submitting them. It's what we do as writers, and I'll never be offended if you say, 'hey--you missed that and I think you should've caught it, or your character should've" or whatever. Sometimes it might be interpretation? And sometime it might be me fucking up. I do it. And when I do, I am always happy to fix my fuck up.
11. AIM -- if you have it? Feel free to talk to me. I'm "ladyofbrileith" on there. Adam is "changehistory" for IC IMing. Melissa is "capturedworlds" for IC IMing. All three of those are open to be chatted with whenever I'm signed in.
12. LJ -- Here ya go. My personal LJ is
ladyofbrileith. It's f-locked 'cause I really don't want my work folks finding my LJ and thoughts about work or RP or fandom, but I'll basically friend anyone who asks and tells me who they are, so if you'd like to be LJ friends and see what's going on in my RL--just drop by, wave at me, and tell me who you are. I'm happy to friend you and get to know the person behind the characters we play. Because we are all real people with real lives behind these fictional characters, and I really try hard to remember that and care about the person on the other side of the screen.
13. State of the Muses -- Adam (this journal), Angie (
seemynightmares), Melissa (
capturedworlds), and Lydia (
thepainted_lady) are my four loudest muses right now. The others are still out and available if people want them, but they aren't the loudest so I may need to be poked if you want a thread with them. If you want a thread...just ask. I'm TRYING to get Byron (
the_corsair) and Aislinn (
alainn_aislinn) out more as their novel is my next project, so. You may see them a bit more. Otherwise, just ask if you'd like to see anyone else on the list. All former relationships from more active RP times are still considered to be there, in my mind.
14. If you've got a problem, please just ask, talk to me. Never assume I don't like you, that I hate your muse, or whatever. Yes, I have very close friends I RP with. I like to think we all do, really, but I am very open to new interaction, to making new friends, and to opening things up. I want to give everyone I play with quality tags, and for us to have fun together. Yes, some storlylines are more intense than others and might get more of my time as we work to resolve them. Yes, sometimes a certain storyline just grabs me and goes "OMG FUN!!!!" and I get sucked into it. Yes, sometimes certain muses are just louder than others. But everyone does that. I promise, I am never deliberately ignoring anyone, and if you feel like I am, I apologize profusely
Err...anything else? Please just ask. Email is bria dot ferguson at gmail dot com. IM and LJ are above. I swear I'm a nice person, and I only bite if you ask very, very nicely. ;-)
