Adam hit the mat with a grunt, head banging back hard enough that he saw stars. He glared up at the woman standing over him, looking like she'd barely broken a sweat. The glare transferred beyond her, to Bob.
"Get up, Adam. Show her again."
It was folly, and barely worth it, but a whole day allowed outside in the enclosed yard was worth it, he said, aching to feel the sun on his skin, to breathe fresh air. It was spring, it was beautiful weather, and he wanted to see it.
To do so, he had to teach this girl a way to channel that strength into skill, though he saw no real need. With her strength, no skill could stand against her. He was learning that, fast. Four hundred years of training were nothing. He'd had bones break, just to heal, more than once this afternoon.
"Keep it up," Bob said again, then turned and left.
The girl offered him a hand. Her smile wasn't really apologetic, but there seemed to be something of comradeship in it. He let her pull him up.
"Again, I suppose," he said, running a hand through his hair.
"Why don't you just show me?" she suggested, with a glance at the door. "I won't fight back."
It was tempting, but Adam shook his head. "No, do what I showed you before. I can take it."
"You want me to just use you as a punching bag?"
"I think I'm supposed to find a way around you, for them," he confessed, arching an eyebrow. "In case they need to control you."
The girl's smile twisted. "They already have that, in Vegas."
His head snapped up then, eyes sharp, and he looked her over far more carefully than he had before. "In Vegas."
"Yeah."
He struck then, hard and fast and with a precise skill that took her by surprise, tumbling them both to the ground, him on top. She stared up at him, surprised, and he took a moment to press his lips to hers hard, one hand flat against the mat. She arched up against him in interesting ways that he wanted to explore more of, but then he was flying across the room, slamming into the wall.
"What the fuck?"
Adam laughed, coughing up blood, but he couldn't stop laughing for a long while.
"Give Linderman my regards. Tell him I'm coming..."
The girl gave him a look like he was crazy and stalked from the room.
