My Adam....

How I see/play/write Adam, quirks and insights into him as a person, friend and lover.  Player/Mun knowledge only.

• Grew up in Puritan England.
• Converted to Catholicism in Milan to marry his second wife, Maria.
• Still carries most of his religious upbringing close to his heart.
• Wants more than anything to be a hero.  He may have twisted ideas of what that means, but he truly wants that feeling back.
• Feels Hiro truly gave him both a mission and a destiny he has yet to fulfill--setting him on a life-course.
• Believes that his immortality as a gift makes him akin to God because of his religious upbringing and the Genesis story -- Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God did not cast them out of Eden solely for that disobedience, but to keep them from eating of the Tree of Life and becoming like God.  Genesis 3:22 - "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:" Adam takes that "become as one of us" very seriously, and that immortality was the final separation between God and man.  Having that, now, Adam believes he is either God or like of the Fallen Angels -- and better blasphemy than abomination. 

• Needs to be loved--more than loved, even. Needs to be adored, to feel like he is someone's hero. 
  
• Desperately needs someone to believe in him, to follow him, to need him, to listen to him and trust him.  If this is lacking, he will keep looking until he finds someone to fulfill that need.
• Identifies a bit too much with Jareth's, "Just fear me, love me, do as I say, and I will be your slave" line.  Could be his credo, honestly.
  

• Is a leader, by natural instinct and learned skill, and thus does not follow well.
• Does not share well at all. Believes that it is the first step to abandonment.
• Fears abandonment and betrayal, but believes that they are nearly inevitable.  Wants to be proven wrong.
• On a similar note -- Hiro was his first love--and he's convinced that pattern of love + betrayal + being rejected in favor of someone else is the defining pattern his love life follows. He's been proven right on that too many times.
• Suspects anyone who says they would choose him above everyone else is lying, but wants someone to genuinely put him first in their life more than nearly anything else--tying in to the need to be someone's hero, to be believed in.
• At the same time, wants someone who challenges him, questions, rather than just agreeing with him blindly.
• However, gets annoyed when questioned, making for a delicate balance.
• Would rather have disciples, but needs friends. 
  
• Doesn't know what to do with friends who are not disciples.

• Was tested, tortured and experimented on by the Company, to include the severing of multiple limbs without anesthesia--on the tame end.
  
• Is more traumatized by those 30 years than he will admit even to himself.
  
• Formed the Company with truly good intentions to both save the world and bring powered people together, to let them grow and learn about their powers in safety
• Honestly believe(s)(d) that pushing "restart" on the Earth was the best way to save it from the never ending wars, famines, plagues, energy crises, overpopulation, destruction of natural resources.

• Excluding RP developed relationships, has truly loved five people in his life: Hiro, Angelica, Diane, Angela and Peter.
• Believes Nathan is his son, even in 'verses where he has no proof of this.
• Seduced Elle Bishop when she was a teenager.  Maybe 18 as implied in canon, but possibly younger, and he was trying not to shock Peter. ;-)  I leave that up to the Elles I play with. *g*
  
• Cares about Elle (and in some RP universes truly loves her), and feels sorry that "his" Company was responsible for torturing her and making her what she is.
• Whether he loves her or not, is fairly obsessed with Elle in a Stockholm Syndrome way, no matter what universe he plays in.

• Drinks too much whiskey, knows it, and doesn't care.

*sigh* The poor thing. Elle can totally sympathize with the whole Stockholm thing AND the note about 'his' company doing that to her? I don't even think she'd put it to his fault because by then he was already locked up and the 'changing of the guards' had put new people in power of the whole thing. But she's still all puppy dog eyes over that.

I always put it that she was younger HAA but that's me. :P

*giggles* I wouldn't be surprised if she was younger? But the whole "caved six years ago" would've put her at 18, so. *g* He might've started earlier on the seduction and just actually had sex when she was 18. I mean, I'm sure he started buttering her up for it as soon as he figured she was susceptible.

Oh yeah canon makes the sexy part legal so the mommys and daddys at home don't write letters about underage minors having sex with 400 year old men. *cough*buffy*cough* but yeah I think I have like that first 'kiss' I wrote about for 10Spot like not marked but for sure I put her at like 16 trying to prove she was older than she was to herself more than him.

And I have no idea where his sudden down mood came from -- he's making Nathan just as nuts with that. But otherwise, do you have any idea how hard it is for me (I have my optimistic moments, but normally I'm a realist at best) to write this silly optimistic boy? *G*

And yet, I really don't want him to lose that. I think it would be so sad if he ended up like 5YG Peter... So, he's probably going to keep making Adam crazy in the meantime.

Just wait until Claude finally stops being an idiot and talks to him -- then it's going to get REALLY complicated, and will probably hurt Adam a bit (unless they end up fighting -- I don't really know how this is going to end up, and I write both of them!)...

I'm starting to just accept that Adam's not going to be happy in v. many of his universes. He's only now starting to deal with some of the trauma, and he's not really letting anyone help him with that--or no one's sure how to help, or something. He's so...he lacks control still in so many ways, and after 30 years at the hands of the Company, he needs to be in control of something. Needs to reassert control over his life. He's happiest, I think, in Eden where he can do that, where he feels things are under his control where they're not really anywhere else. So, optimism...heh. He eyes Peter rather askance with that, yes. He was going so far as to have suicide discussions with Isaac yesterday that were downright disturbing.

I've no idea what to do with him. And yeah--the Claude thing on top of Nathan is going to sting. Poor baby. He just wants a Peter of his own.

And of course, Peter doesn't want to hurt anyone he cares for, so he's pulling himself every which way to try and deal with things. Deep down inside, he's starting to realize that he's probably not going to die either, and therefore knows he's going to lose most of them. He's desperately trying not to acknowledge that fact -- he doesn't even want to say it out loud, because that would make it real.

There's an entertaining thread with Nathan (would be mun knowledge only because he's locked it to Nathan) over here... He does care for Adam even after everything that happened -- even after being used by him, which normally would be a deal-breaker -- because he can feel there's just so much more to Adam than that.

Of course not. *pets Peter* Adam's just got so many issues, that honestly anyone would likely hurt him somehow right now, because even he doesn't know what he needs. Peter's like his first chance at not facing the world alone for eternity, but he looks around and all his Peters are in love with other people too, and he has no idea how to deal with that 'cause it becomes "eternity of watching you love other people? Um, no thanks." and freaks. And he knows Peter has to be struggling with the immortality thing, and has no idea how to help, 'cause he can't let himself get close enough.

Well Adam's so....complex, yes, and layered and the bad guy who genuinely believes he's doing something necessary and good, who collects people, yes, but out of a need for that security he's never had. I mean, even in Eden--he genuinely wants to be the hero and save the people who are left and that makes him very....twisty and hard to follow sometimes, because he's not what you expect from a super!villain

He and Bennet have a lot in common in that respect. I mean, in the comics at least, Bennet, while on the run, captured that one guy and called Bob to let him know where he was, which probably put them on his trail. He really does want to help protect the world from the dangerous ones. He might kidnap people and try to beat up his boss, but...

Unfortunately, there is one abandonment that Hiro understands and that Adam can't stop. Much as he could keep travelling farther into the future, unless immortality becomes a reality to regular people at some time, he's going to lose Hiro somewhere along the line. And much as Hiro would be willing to get immortality to stay with him (in the universes where they're involved, that is. Other ones he views the whole question quite differently), it's one the few things he doesn't believe will ever happen.

Yeah. I think Adam sees that more as life, though. He's pragmatic about it, even as he hates it--but it's not the sort of abandonment that makes him angry or lash out.

Can understand that. Although Hiro can't really understand why Adam considers what he did as abandonment since his own mind thinks of it more as being practical and returning to his own time. Unfortunately, he expects Adam to know this.

Heh. I think more Yaeko kissing and the choosing her over Adam (in Adam's head) is the betrayal and even the abandonment. I mean, he might snarl about the leaving and going home stuff, but rationally, he gets that Hiro had to. But I think he'd rather it have been with a kiss goodbye of his own and a hope of a future or ..something.

Ah, ok. I was thinking them more as separate issues. Betrayal on the one hand, then abandonment the other. I mean Hiro is more than willing to admit to the fact that he betrayed Adam (in more ways than one), but I'm not sure he understands the abandonment part.

*nods* I think...Adam sees one as leading to the other. Abandonment is betrayal/Betrayal is abandonment. Mostly lately coming down to the fact that he believes people he loves will always choose someone else over him if forced to choose. That he is never enough, etc, etc.

I have to admit that the wanting to be loved, adored, and followed thing is one of the things that intrigues me most about Adam. He's seriously not your straight-up bad guy. And I feel like Lucy might not necessarily follow him, but she would definitely walk beside him, if that makes any sense.
